Little Did He Know

by Jennifer Karr Leslie

They surrounded him.
He was inside.

They did not identify.
He did not know.

They yanked up his door.
He was prepared.
They wondered why.
He realized it was them.
They said put it down.

He did.

They continued to shout.
He was ambushed.
They expected a fight.
He knew they would attack.

They did.

He positioned himself to run.
They saw him clearly.

He bolted.
They retreated.
He found an escape.
They allowed it.

He was home free.

Little did he know.

They had one more.

This poem is for you, brother.
